The Pros and Cons of the Wildfire App
The Wildfire App is a hyperlocal news app that notifies students when campus events occur. On the app, students provide news for other students by reporting on issues around them. This is similar to citizen journalism which refers to journalism that is generated by people who are not professionals.
In the Wildfire App users are allowed to share information under the following categories: Alerts, Chatter, Safety, Tips, Events, Campus Crush, Student Problems, Buy/Sell, and Memes.
The Wildfire app was introduced to the UIC community earlier this year. Here are the top pros and cons of the app.

The Wildfire app focuses on local information relevant to students. For example, recently a student reported several police cars around Harrison street warning students to stay safe.
The app filters and allows only UIC students with an active UIC email to share information. This guarantees that you will only get alerts from other UIC students.
Additionally, the majority of issues posted in the app are not covered by local news sources like the Chicago Tribune. This is because the Wildfire app was made for sharing local news within a campus.

The Wildfire app acts as a form of social media and it is not for emergencies. The feature “Chatter” allows students to share random thoughts, even when they are not relevant. This conflicts with the main purpose of the app: to inform students about what is going on around the campus.
Furthermore, Wildfire is not fully reliable. Unlike professional journalists, students don’t have a list of sources backing up their information. Some students include photos or links with their messages which is limited proof. This can potentially provoke unnecessary chaos and fear among students.
