Films that are Black written and directed like Queen Sugar, The Hate You Give, Get Out and even Us, make people talk. However, it is no secret that in America the conversations only last for so long before everyone moves on to the next topic. This film will bring the conversation again or at least make it more public but also it has the potential for an extensive conversation.

“Unlike other films, this one tries to make people talk about both sides, to change the political climate,” says Melina Matsoukas (Director). She admits that there are going to be people who are going to be on both sides of the conversation but she hopes most people are on the right side of history.

• It’s all about Love

Writer Lena Waithe states that the best power to fight against injustice is love and that is what this film is about. Love works differently for each character and some might not understand all the acts of love shared in this film. This goes handy when dealing with themes like activism because while some see it as disturbance others see it as love for a cause.

Another critical point that this film brings is the importance of helping each other and internalized racism. I won’t give spoilers away but these are some of the most visible attributes in the film; who helps them and who doesn’t.

• It’s Relevant

According to Kaluuya, this film is not meant to be entertaining. During an interview with Variety, he states that he chose to accept roles that deal with race because that is what he wants to see in films. This film is not meant to be entertaining and most will agree that it makes them feel upset.

This year we have experienced several movies that deal with upsetting social issues. and this film seems to be hoping to make viewers feel sadness, happiness and of course anger.

Lastly, what makes it relevant is the focus on racism. It’s a topic that is older than all of us and it seems to be evolving instead of disappearing. The themes that the film deals with are relevant in itself and therefore it should have a lot of attention. I recommend taking some time to process after watching the movie. As mentioned before, this can generate more than one feeling making it overwhelming for some.
