John's contribution to comedy

John’s humble beginnings started in Detroit, Michigan. He was one of 11 siblings and grew up in poverty. While doing an interview with the popular New York radio morning show, The Breakfast Club, he reflects on his childhood saying, “I used to have to wear two left boots to school in the winter because we were so poor. It was uncomfortable but I made it work.” However, John didn’t allow his circumstances to dictate his future and he began working as a stand-up comedian before he hit the big screen.

In 1977, he acted out various roles on The Richard Pryor Show and from there, his career in television and film took off. He starred in over 70 tv shows and films combined. His most iconic roles include Mr. Jackson in Boomerang, Willie Jones in the Friday series, “Pops” in The Wayans Bros., and “Granddad” in The Boondocks.

Some of his most famous punchlines include: “The secret is you got to coordinate,” “BANG! BANG!BANG!” “Don’t nobody go in the bathroom for at least 35-45 minutes,” and “Momentmemum.”

John leaves behind his unique legacy, his lovely wife of 30 years, Angela, and their two children J.D.(John David) and Alexander. John is an icon and he will truly be missed by all.
